Conception and writing [edit]

Screenwriter Barbara Curry, who was a criminal lawyer for ten years, revealed that she created the script's original concept after running past a house which she described as her "dream house". A "bad male child" her son went to school with resided in the house beyond the street, which gave her a "really interesting" concept about a neighborhood boy creating disharmonize and "driving a wedge between a family". This served as her inspiration for the screenplay.[5]

Curry stated that the "start few drafts of [the picture] focused on a 12-year-one-time boy and a mother'southward trial of trying to get her son out of this boy's clutches, and gradually, information technology became something else".[5] In the original script, Claire was "happily married", but Curry chose to have her separated due to her hubby'due south infidelity, so that she could be a "more sympathetic grapheme".[v] Curry was influenced by the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who became involved with her underage student, causing her to be bedevilled for rape charges.[5] Director Rob Cohen revealed that in Back-scratch's draft, the grapheme of Noah was younger, but he made the conscious conclusion to age him to 19, considering he felt equally if it was "non healthy" and that audiences would lose sympathy for the protagonist. Explaining her character, Lopez stated that Claire was feeling "worthless" after her husband cheated, and "People tin can understand that. They can sympathise making a mistake in a moment like that."[6]

The Boy Next Door 'southward plot has been compared to the thriller films Basic Instinct (1992) and Swimfan (2002),[5] [7] while being dubbed "the Fatal Attraction of 2015".[8] The formerly dominant erotic thriller genre had been fading from Hollywood features since the 1990s. Director Rob Cohen stated that with the film, he wanted to "reinvent the genre in an entertaining style" that would reverberate "2015, not 1990".[9]

Pre-production [edit]

Casting of The Boy Side by side Door began early September 2013, when Jennifer Lopez was called to play Claire.[10] Kristin Chenoweth was afterward cast in the film as Lopez's grapheme'southward friend.[11] In October 2013, John Corbett and Ryan Guzman were bandage in the film, with Corbett playing Lopez'southward ex-husband and Guzman playing the titular part.[12] [thirteen] After an audition, newcomer Lexi Atkins was also cast in the pic for a small function.[14]

Lopez, who as well served as producer on the pic, chose a fellow Latino thespian Guzman to bandage in the film, stating that "two Latinos opening in a mainstream movie, if information technology does well, that's gonna alter things. I would dearest for the Latino community to come out and support this movie considering it would give u.s. the liberty."[fifteen] She also stated that "We [Latinos] don't accept to be close-minded, where two Latinos accept to be speaking Spanish or they take to take some Latin reference in the movie... That'south what I love about this film. We're breaking down the walls and stereotypes."[16]

Filming [edit]

"And over again, being so intense, being 25 days and knowing we had so much to attain in each twenty-four hour period, it was sometimes looking at the telephone call sheet and going, 'How the hell are nosotros going to do this all in one day?' We have to be a real team, and and so we did accept fun and we did accept great communication."

—Lopez on filming The Boy Next Door [6]

On his approach, Cohen said that he refused to consider making the film PG-13: "The first thing I said was, 'If you want me, I'm making an R-rated movie. I don't desire to deal with sexual activity and brand information technology, like, for 13-year-olds.'" [9] The picture took 23 days to shoot.[iii] Discussing its micro-budget, Lopez stated: "You know what, we put all four million dollars in front end of the camera! Nosotros all shared 1 trailer, we had no craft service, it wasn't that type of luxury movie fix, let'southward say."[17] She also found that the limited budget and filming period was "super intense", saying: "I never had done a moving picture similar that in my career. That was the first time nosotros did that, but it was very liberating every bit an artist because it made me realize I can make whatever movie I want like this."[half dozen] On filming sexual practice scenes, Guzman said "that was the time in the motion picture when I was the nigh uncomfortable. We had to choreograph every piece... It was the most unsexy-really-sexy scene that you'll see on screen."[sixteen] Filming took identify throughout fall 2013 in Los Angeles.[18] In December 2013, the film received permit to shoot in Placerita Canyon, Newhall.[19] Some of the remaining scenes were also filmed in April 2014.[20]
